Assessment and testing 2016-17

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

All children in reception will be assessed using the new NEXUS baseline assessment tests during term 1. EYFS staff will ensure this information is transferred and recorded in 2Simple.

We continue to assess the children throughout Reception; observations are used to measure progress and to inform planning.  We also involve children in their own assessment through our marking system; the children are given many opportunities to reflect on their work and to improve it using guidance from the teacher.

We use iPads and a software programme called 2Simple to collate photographs and comments; each family will receive an electronic ‘Learning Journey’ for their child. As the children start to achieve the higher levels in reading, writing or maths, work will be planned using the Year 1 national curriculum. All end of year data for EYFS is passed to the Local Authority (LA) as required by law and reported to parents.

Key Stages 1 and 2

Teachers make summative judgements for reading, writing and maths at the end of Terms 2, 4 and 6. These are based upon assessment coverage in Classroom Monitor – an online assessment tracker that contains objectives from the NEXUS curriculums in reading, writing and maths. Data is input over the course of the long term and at the end, teachers are able to ascertain a judgement based upon age related expectation. There are regular opportunities provided for teachers to moderate their judgements internally and with other schools, including those with the NEXUS partnership.

Science, P.E. and foundation subjects have summative judgements made at the end of each key topic question studied. Skills covered throughout the key question are assessed.

National Tests and Assessments

All children in Y1 are screened using a compulsory Phonics Screening Tracker. Any child who does not meet the expected standard will be required to be rescreened towards the end of Year 2. The results of both screeners are collected nationally.

Each year children in Y2 and Y6 will take Standard Attainment Tests (SATs). Children in Y2 are tested in reading, spelling and grammar and maths. These tests are taken to help inform teacher assessment in Reading, Writing and Maths using the Interim Framework.

In Y6, the children take Reading, Maths and ‘Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar’ tests. Writing will be assessed using teacher assessment. Teachers will also make their own judgements about attainment using the national Interim Frameworks for Reading, Maths and Science and these will be reported to the Local Authority.

Internal Testing

We do test each child in Years 3, 4 and 5 to take a snapshot of their attainment at that time in reading, writing and maths.
