Sports News - South West Spring Games
A huge, huge congratulations must go to all 18 children who represented our school and South Glos at the level 3 sports county finals on Thursday 27th April. We took 4 teams- the first time our school has had more than one team qualify for such an event. The best teams from South Glos, Bristol, BANES and North Somerset assembled to take part in the event at Bristol Grammar School's playing fields.
Cycling – our 4 cyclists were seeded in the top rounds after the qualifying races. We ended up as the winning school overall and wore our gold medals proudly!! Anna Liverton was also awarded gold overall in the girls’ event and Jude Munday silver in the boys. Dominic Green and Jake Nation contributed to the team gold. A superb outcome for the team’s first major competition!
Archery – our year 3&4 and 5&6 archery teams took part in a very long competition where they had to aim at targets, shoot for distance and accuracy. All 8 children shot well in outdoor conditions (the qualifying competition had been indoors). Although neither team placed, they should all be really proud of their achievements. Well done to: Evie Carlisle, Freya Higgins, Henry Curzon, Oliver Holt, Sophie Irwin, Jack Sperrings, Molly Bryant and Finlay Martin.
Hockey - The whole day was a great experience for the children and a very exciting one for Mr Dowse and the parents/grandparents who watched each game. Without exaggeration, our team could have with a little more good fortune have won all of their games, and that's without taking credit from our opponents who played without exception in a manner that brought credit to each of their schools with the skill and good sportsmanship shown. Our children also showed great skill, sportsmanship and determination and represented Mangotsfield honourably, they might not have won the tournament but they should be very proud of their efforts in this competition which was of a very high standard. Congratulations to: Blaine Roberts, Matthew Clatworthy, Alfie Rowles, Ellie Donaldson, Eva Emmett and Ruby Osborne.
Finally can I take the opportunity to thank all of the parents and carers who transported children and /or came to support us throughout the day. It was great to have so many of you there, especially in cold conditions for this time of year and with quite a bit of hanging around to do for the archery event.
A special mention must go also go to Mike Dowse, our sports play worker, who gave up his own time to accompany the hockey squad. Your coaching and support for the children was invaluable- thank you!
